The 9 pieces of the IB diploma
3 Higher level (HL) subjects
+ 3 Standard level SL (SL) subjects
+ 1 Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course
+ 1 Extended Essay (EE)
+ 1 Creativity, Action, Service programme (CAS)
= 9 required components
· Creativity, Action, Service (CAS)
Activities students participate in throughout the IB Diploma program.
Participation in all three areas of at least 50 hours each. CAS involves extracurricular activities and takes place outside school. CAS covers a broad spectrum of activities, including artistic and musical interests, voluntary work and athletic activities. The school sets aside one half-day per week for these activities, which will be pursued throughout the two-year IB course. The components are designed to encourage the disciplined thinking, self-motivation and independence needed for higher education.
· Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
A course (class) in critical thinking and understanding. The course integrates and connects all subjects studied.
· Write an Extended Essay of 4,000 words
The essay covers one of the six chosen subjects. It is an in-depth study or investigation of a limited topic and will be supervised by a teacher, who also provides assistance and guidance. The student chooses the topic. The Extended Essay is normally completed during the second year of the course, giving the student time to build a thesis.
Assessment for the IB diploma
A student's performance in the International Baccalaureate is assessed in the second year of the course during examinations in May. He or she will be entered for examinations in all six subjects. The papers are graded externally. The Extended Essay is also assessed externally. All examination papers are set and graded by the IBO. The IB Diploma, however, is not entirely based on external assessment. Most subjects have internally assessed work graded by the teacher. This may be coursework, fieldwork, practical and/or laboratory work, and adds at least twenty per cent to the final grade. The teachers also assess the Theory of Knowledge course and CAS activities.
The award of the diploma
Award of the diploma is based on a system of scores. Seven grades or points are available for each subject, ranging from 1 ('very poor') to 7 ('excellent'). The candidate must collect a total of 24 points to receive a diploma. The candidate who achieves '4' ('satisfactory') in all six subjects will therefore have a total of 24 points and be successful. It is also possible to earn three bonus points for achievements in the Extended Essay and TOK course.
Applicable conditions
A student who fails to earn the full diploma will be awarded certificates showing the grades obtained in the six individual subjects of the examination. Under exceptional circumstances it is possible to study for IB certificates only. Since 1998, IB candidates who fail the May examination may register as a six-month retake candidate for the examinations in November.
The International Baccalaureate at the TIS
Education at the International School TIS is aimed at the realization of each individual's full potential. The school provides each student with a schedule in order to facilitate an overview of material covered in each class. The work-programme is divided into weekly tasks that are handed in for correction and evaluation. This way we can closely monitor each student's progress and adapt the curriculum. Not only results are reported, but also the student's efforts. Students and parents therefore can be kept informed at all times.
How are students scored with the IB?
Students receive a total score out of 45. This score is calculated in the following way:
Each subject is awarded up to 7 points (6 groups) = 42;
Core subjects TOK and EE can earn 3 points;
CAS is mandatory.
